Two-Lanes to Single Lane Roundabout

  • Traffic on Highway 212 and Morningside Avenue will merge from two lanes into a single lane when approaching the roundabout. Some examples of this type of approach exist in other places throughout the state, including:
  • MnDOT is designing a single lane roundabout vs. a multilane roundabout because:
    • A single lane roundabout appropriately accommodates the amount of traffic at this intersection now and into the future
    • It is designed with a mountable curb to accommodate large vehicles and trucks
    • Single lane roundabouts are more freight friendly and have less crashes compared to multilane roundabouts
  • Single lane roundabouts are more pedestrian friendly as they reduce the crossing distance that pedestrians have to make
